The race to get the industrial products in the hands of development engineers is on. McMaster-Carr is setting the course; Encole is making a niche business out of it. Basically, the technology of an e-catalog with OEM parts is converging with CAD systems. At the Design-2-Parts trade show in Long Beach Encole asked 7 suppliers of stock products - ceramic components, Alloy 20 parts, OEM process automation components, if they would like us to list their products on Encole.com. We received positive answers.
This is a very powerful trend in OEM products sales - no more requests for quotation and emailing technical questions. Technology is being developed in real time, in parallel with the buyer's efforts focused on core work while vendor's components are available for download as CAD models and assisted by vendors' engineering support on demand. It's a matter of time for this business to take hold. China is ready for something like this, as a substantial amount of engineering work is being done there.
